130 charged in Move Over blitz

The Ontario Provincial Police laid 130 charges during a recent “Move Over Initiative” on Highway 417 in North Glengarry and Highway 401 in South Stormont and South Dundas.

The operation, which took place for about six hours July 19, was intended to reinforce the significance of the “Slow down, move over” law which requires drivers to slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle parked at the roadside with its emergency lights activated.

If it can be done safely and there is more than one lane, the driver must also vacate the lane adjacent to the emergency vehicle.

The legislation was amended last year to include tow truck drivers.

Of the 130 charges laid, 104 were for violation of that law; 11 were for speeding infractions; five were seat belt-related. One ticket was issued to a suspended driver and one for an insurance violation.

Eight Highway Traffic Act tickets were also issued.
