Combined effort prevails
A new division and combined teams were the story of the juvenile boys group this summer in the Glengarry Soccer League.
The division replaced U19 and U16 levels from past years, and saw one of the joint squads, Dunvegan / Vankleek Hill, snag the 2016 championship on a rainy Saturday evening in Alexandria.
The water-logged field challenged player footing on both sides at times, while the victors took advantage of their opportunities to sink the Alexandria team 7-0.
Rain showers varied in intensity throughout the match, as did the emotional level, which referee Marc DeRepentigny managed to keep a lid on with his stern demeanour and a handful of cards.
David Spacek led the offence with a hat trick. Nik Ayotte scored twice, and Lucas Guyennon and Patrick Poirier each found the net once.
The one-day playoff tournament opened with Char-Lan beating Laggan / Glen Sandfield 2 on a 2-1 effort. Char-Lan was later bounced by the eventual champions, 1-0.
Alexandria won its first match 1-0 over Laggan / Glen Sandfield 1.
