Novice rowers shine in meet
Coached by Sylvie Sabourin, who also serves as coxswain, a quad (four scullers) from the Upper Canada Rowing Club competed Aug. 28 at a meet hosted by the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club, where the ladies performed admirably.
The group of Kylee Amell (stroke position), Jessica Kuhn (three seat), Amanda van Loenen (two seat), and Taylor Rodgers (bow seat) raced in the 10 km event, placing fourth, with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 55 seconds. The winning time was just under 48 minutes.
For the local ladies, this was their first competitive race.
Sabourin’s role as coxswain is to steer the boat and set the stroke rate at various points during the race. As well, she gives the scullers feedback.
These rowers are products of the Upper Canada club’s learn to row program.
The local club is the only one east of Ottawa, formed recently. It hosts multi-week instructional courses, a skills event, ergometer races, and kids camps.
