Celtic tops amongst tier 2 men
The Glen Sandfield Celtic Ole Boyz capped off their 10th season of play in the Glengarry Soccer League’s tier 2 men’s division by winning the playoff championship on Monday night, in Williamstown, with a 2-1 extra time effort, over the McCrimmon Combines.
Ryan Cunning of the White Shirts opened the scoring midway through the first half, with the Celtics’ Wesley Stephenson replying before the interval.
The second half saw both sides trade chances, with Celtic goal- keeper Brendan Reid making a number of saves to hold the score.
Three minutes into overtime, Shawn “Crazy Legs” Montroy set up Ian “Smokey” Butcher for the golden goal.
For the Celtic, the triumph marked the team’s ninth in its history and the fifth in a row.
This, the 25th season for the division, was one of its most competitive by far. Game three of the finals was particularly so, with McCrimmon pressing and dangerous throughout the match.
