Family continues volunteer tradition
Lancaster and area residents will be able to enjoy the outdoor skating rink at Smithfield Park again this winter thanks to the efforts of a local family.
Shannon Desgroseilliers and her children have volunteered to look after the flooding and shovelling of the popular site, starting this Winter.
Marcel Desgroseilliers, Shannon’s late husband, took care of the ice surface for many years.
He died this past April as the result of an accident at the family home in Lancaster.
“Mrs. Desgroseilliers wants to continue with this (rink maintenance), along with her children, as a tribute to her husband,” township general manager of infrastructure services Ewen MacDonald said at the September 19 regular council meeting.
“I have spoken with the township’s parks and facilities lead hand, Richard Lapierre, and he will be communicating with Mrs. Desgroseilliers and coordinating with her to set things up. We’ll be continuing on with the outdoor rink for the foreseeable future,” added Mr. MacDonald.
