Char-Lan seniors opens with 4-1 win over Tagwi
Monday saw the SDGAA high school girls soccer season kick off in Williamstown, where the Char-Lan Crusaders senior squad held off the Tagwi Warriors, 4-1.
Playing in breezy, cool conditions, Char-Lan got a goal early, as a ball sent in off a corner kick rolled off the Tagwi keeper’s hands and just over the line.
The Crusaders had frequent stretches of sustained pressure, testing the opposing defence and goalie.
The host side made it 2-0 late in the first half, capitalizing on sustained ball control.
Tagwi had the early edge in second- half play, but it was Char-Lan that found its scoring touch, as the Crusaders mounted an attack, with a finishing shot from the top of the 18-yard box that arced over the goalie.
The Warriors continued to work hard and were rewarded with a goal of their own, but Char-Lan iced it late, on a well-placed shot to the far side of the net.
Tagwi’s goal was netted by Shelby Booker, while Cara MacDonald scored twice for the Crusaders. Also finding the goal for the home side were Lee-Anne Warden and Hannah McDonell.
The St. Joseph’s Panthers were also in Williamstown on Monday, bagging a pair of wins.
First, they scored a lopsided shutout victory over Tagwi.
