BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor It was a terrific start to the high school girls hockey season for the Char-Lan Crusaders, as the ladies scored a pair of decisive results in Dec. 20 action, in Alexandria.

After getting a bye for the league’s previous tournament, the Crusaders began the 2016-17 campaign with a 5-0 shutout of the GDHS Gaels.

With Brittany MacLeod Mayes between the pipes for the Gaels, the first period went into the books scoreless.

Glengarry took control in the second, though, starting with a Brenna Thomson tally just two minutes in, set up by Hannah Thomson, who would also score later.

Other Char-Lan tallies were netted by Sara Laking, Quinn Mulhearn, and Makayla Petrie.

Chantal Vivarais, Laking, and Mulhearn picked up additional helpers.

Playing Tagwi later in the day. the Crusaders got an early marker from H. Thomson and never look back.

She would go on to net a hat trick in the game, as the Crusaders crushed the Warriors 8-1.

Chelsea Cayer counted four points, including a pair of goals.

Also finding the back of the Gaels’ net were B. Thomson, Meara MacDonell, and Grace Laplante.

Other assists went to Katherine Thomson (2), B. Thomson, Petrie, Laplante, Emily Tourangeau, and H. Thomson.

Tagwi’s lone tally came in the late going, with 1:38 remaining on the clock, as Sierra Woodside snuck one in, set up by Aimee Van Loon and Kate Kelly.

As it turned out, that was the only goal the Warriors would get on the day, as they were blanked by La Citadelle in their other action.

Glengarry District’s other contest saw the Gaels spanked by St. Joseph’s 7-1, with Ellie MacKinnon credited for the goal.

Earning assists were Emma Pasco and Emma Hardy.

The girls from Holy Trinity went unbeaten on the day, nabbing a win and a tie.

The victory was all-the-more sweet, as it came against Catholic rival St. Joseph’s, a 2-0 effort.

Jasmin Riel backstopped the shutout, while Kara McClenaghan and Leah McDonald had the goals.

Recognized with assists were Madison Pawis, Taylor Barkley, and Vanessa Cholette.

The Falcons also played to a 4-4 tie with La Citadelle. Les Patriotes led for much of the game, as HT had to battle from behind.

Goals were notched by McClenaghan, Emma VanderBurg, Pawis, and Barkley, who scored with just 1:48 left on the clock to get the tie for HT.
