Staff Two months after its of­fi­cial open­ing, the Dalkeith li­brary is still go­ing strong and en­joy­ing a new life as the ham­let’s de facto com­mu­nity cen­tre.

On this par­tic­u­lar Thurs­day af­ter­noon, three area women are gath­ered around a com­mu­nal ta­ble, where they are work­ing on var­i­ous art projects. Mean­while, li­brary vol­un­teer ( and former SDG Li­brary Board mem­ber) Bar­bara Le­htiniemi, is talk­ing about how Thurs­day evenings have be­come “men’s night” at the li­brary. “Around eight men usu­ally show up to play cards and talk,” she says. “They usu­ally need two ta­bles.”
