Crusaders crush it in SD&G hockey, claim crown
The boys from Char-Lan District High School in Williamstown have topped the league all season, so it probably isn’t a surprise that they are also now SD&G hockey playoff champions.
The Crusaders, sporting a 9-1 regular-season record, entered the Feb. 27 playoff tournament at their home rink heavily favoured, and the boys made sure to live up to their billing.
The SDGAA championship game pitted the Char-Lan boys against third- ranked North Dundas, with the Crusaders taking charge from the outset, en route to an 8-4 triumph.
Char-Lan scored four times in the first period to set the tone that the boys weren’t going to be denied their title.
Coach Sean O’Farrell beams with pride over the success of his troops, saying that the boys “play as hard as they can each and every shift.”
He extends his compliments to the Devils, noting, “Twice we were up by four, and they came back to within two.
“We came so close to winning SD&G last year, [so] it was nice to get back and take it home this time.”
One of the veteran players of the squad, Kurt Alexander, has skated with the Crusaders all three years he’s been at the school. He says of their success this season, “We are playing really well as a team. We’re moving the puck and making strong passes. It showed today [in the SD&G playoff tournament].”
Campbell Craig describes his team’s effort in the final as “really a solid three periods.
“Our team has worked hard to get to this point, and all lines are really solid. We can rely on each line to produce quality chances and plays.”
As the SDGAA playoff champion, Char-Lan earned a berth at EOSSAA, which was scheduled to be played yesterday, March 6, in Arnprior. Please see our website sportsintheglens.com for updates, and we will have more in The
