Women set for soccer playoffs
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor The top four women’s teams from the 2017-18 indoor soccer season have qualified for GSL playoffs, which are scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, March 20, at the dome in Alexandria, with a pair of one-game knockout matches.
First place Alexandria, which completed its campaign as winners of 15 of 18 matches, will take on fourth-seeded Vankleek Hill, which has a record of 7 wins, 1 tie, and 10 losses, in a match booked for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The 8:30 p.m. game will feature Dunvegan and Glen Nevis, teams that ended the regular season with identical 14-1-3 records.
Winners will advance to the championship series, a best-of-three-games affair. Scheduled dates of play are March 22, March 27, and, if necessary, March 29, all starting at 7:30 p.m. best goals differential of +69. Glen Nevis was next, at +53. At the other end of the spectrum was Maxville, at -66.
Dunvegan scored the most goals (91). Glen Nevis allowed the fewest (21).
Leading in shutouts were Alexandria and Dunvegan, both with 6.
Three teams – Char-Lan (6-2-10), Dalhart (2-016), and Maxville (2-0-16) – finished outside of the playoff picture.
On the final day of regular-season play on March 6, Alexandria rolled over Maxville 7-1. Emily MacMaster scored four times for the victors, with other Alexandria tallies notched by Braelyn MacMaster (2) and Elizabeth McCormick. Shannon Renaud potted Maxville’s marker. That night also saw Dunvegan top Dalhart 4-1, on goals from Rosy Leroux (2), Emily McDonald, and Michelle DeRepentigny. Alyson Graham scored for Dalhart. The other March 6 tilt ended in a 2-2 draw, between Char-Lan and Glen Nevis. Jessica Lagden had both tallies for the former, while Glen Nevis’ goals came from Logan Leger and Alexa Winkiewicz.
