Women set for soc­cer play­offs

BY SEAN BRAY Sports Edi­tor The top four women’s teams from the 2017-18 in­door soc­cer sea­son have qual­i­fied for GSL play­offs, which are sched­uled to kick off on Tues­day, March 20, at the dome in Alexan­dria, with a pair of one-game knock­out matches.

First place Alexan­dria, which com­pleted its cam­paign as win­ners of 15 of 18 matches, will take on fourth-seeded Van­kleek Hill, which has a record of 7 wins, 1 tie, and 10 losses, in a match booked for a 7:30 p.m. start.

The 8:30 p.m. game will fea­ture Dun­ve­gan and Glen Ne­vis, teams that ended the reg­u­lar sea­son with iden­ti­cal 14-1-3 records.

Win­ners will ad­vance to the cham­pi­onship se­ries, a best-of-three-games af­fair. Sched­uled dates of play are March 22, March 27, and, if nec­es­sary, March 29, all start­ing at 7:30 p.m. best goals dif­fer­en­tial of +69. Glen Ne­vis was next, at +53. At the other end of the spec­trum was Maxville, at -66.

Dun­ve­gan scored the most goals (91). Glen Ne­vis al­lowed the fewest (21).

Lead­ing in shutouts were Alexan­dria and Dun­ve­gan, both with 6.

Three teams – Char-Lan (6-2-10), Dal­hart (2-016), and Maxville (2-0-16) – fin­ished out­side of the play­off pic­ture.

On the fi­nal day of reg­u­lar-sea­son play on March 6, Alexan­dria rolled over Maxville 7-1. Emily MacMaster scored four times for the victors, with other Alexan­dria tal­lies notched by Brae­lyn MacMaster (2) and El­iz­a­beth McCormick. Shan­non Re­naud pot­ted Maxville’s marker. That night also saw Dun­ve­gan top Dal­hart 4-1, on goals from Rosy Ler­oux (2), Emily McDon­ald, and Michelle DeRe­pentigny. Alyson Gra­ham scored for Dal­hart. The other March 6 tilt ended in a 2-2 draw, be­tween Char-Lan and Glen Ne­vis. Jes­sica Lag­den had both tal­lies for the for­mer, while Glen Ne­vis’ goals came from Lo­gan Leger and Alexa Winkiewicz.
