Almost immediately after Alexandria’s Mill Square was closed for the weekend for the Operation Cold Turkey initiative, North Glengarry council has, once again, approved a temporary closure.

This time it will be from 3-10 p.m. on June 8 so that the Alexandria and District Chamber of Commerce can hold an outdoor barbecue.

Mayor Chris McDonell asked if restaurants adjacent to Mill Square ever complained about the closure. Recreation Director Anne Leduc replied that in the case of the upcoming closure, the restaurants are even participating in the barbecue.

Councillor Brian Caddell wondered if it was necessary to close the entire street for smaller events. He pointed out that during Operation Cold Turkey, there were only a few people camping overnight. “Point well taken,” replied Ms. Leduc.

Cold Turkey

Operation Cold Turkey was a weekend-long initiative organized by the Glengarry-Stormont branch of Clan Donald. Volunteers from the SDG Highlanders and 379 Glengarry Mustang Air Cadets camped out and collected food donations as a way of raising awareness about local poverty.
