Novice Rebels triumph for UCMHL championship

The Glengarry News - - Sports in the Glens - Sean Bray

Char-Lan’s novice rep. Rebels hockey team is the 2018 UCMHL playoff champion.

The five-point series went the distance, wrapping up on home ice in Williamstown, on March 29, when Rebels, sponsored by PURE Organic Spa, scored a 4-2 comeback victory.

The visiting Kemptville Panthers opened the contest with a pair of first-period goals, but their offence was stymied from there, as Char-Lan went to work, potting four unanswered tallies.

Bennett Whitehorne began the response, with a late one in the opening frame, as the Rebs had the Kemptville goaltender under pressure, splayed on the ice.

Landon Lauzon drew the equalizer on a breakaway early in the second stanza, blowing his shot past the goalie.

A few minutes later, Carter Verdone carried the play into the offensive zone, getting a shot on goal. The squad continued to attack, setting the stage for Chace Mader to score what would stand as the game-winner.

Whitehorne added an insurance marker off a sweet Verdone feed from the corner, in the third frame to seal the championship.

Char- Lan took the title, six points to four. Prior to game five, each team had one win, one loss, and two ties.
