BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor The Glengarry Soccer League has a new women’s champion this year, as Alexandria dispatched Dunvegan in the three-game title series.
The Blue Shirts opened with a 2-0 victory on March 22, but five days later, Alexandria, which topped the regular-season table finishing three points ahead of Dunvegan, evened the series with a 3-2 shootout win.
Alexandria’s Emily MacMaster scored in the first half, and Alexa Demers replied for Team Blue late in regulation to tie the affair. A 10minute overtime settled nothing, so it was on to penalty kicks.
In the shootout, Alexandria goalkeeper Victoria Villalba stoned all but one Dunvegan player, as opposing net nanny Caroline DeRepentigny was the only Blue Shirt to solve the Red keeper.
Meanwhile, Braelyn MacMaster and Quinn MacKinnon scored for Alexandria, securing the win.
That set the stage for a deciding third match on March 29.
The contest was scoreless into the second half, when Dana Vaillancourt led the charge for Alexandria, scoring twice, including the game-winner on a header, to pace her side to a 3-2 victory.
Emily MacMaster had the other Red Shirt tally.
Demers opened the scoring for Dunvegan, on a break in alone, before Alexandria tied it.
Michelle DeRepentigny scored later, briefly tying the contest at 2-2.
Dunvegan pressed its attack down to the final whistle, continuing to test defenders and Villalba in net, but was unable to score again, as Alexandria held to secure the trophy.
