The United Counties of SD&G have authorized a $3,000 donation to the Lancaster Legion to help it erect a monument to the Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan.
Legion member Pierre Roy, who is spearheading the monument project, says that the counties donation brings his fundraising total to $15,000. South Glengarry township has committed to donating an additional $15,000.
The monument, which will be situated on a patch of land between the Legion and the Chartwell nursing home next door, will consist of a decommissioned LAVIII – a full-size light armoured vehicle – that has been made available by the Department of National Defence.
Mr. Roy hopes to unveil the monument by the beginning of July.
