CLEANING UP THE RIVER:
Dive master Ron MacDonald, president of the Seaway Valley Divers, holds an old square face gin bottle, part of a haul of underwater debris collected by scuba divers on Saturday morning at the Great River Cleanup event at Lancaster Wharf. With him is Karen Douglass Cooper from the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences which co-organized the event with the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club. Lisa Goodier, left, a volunteer with Blue Fish Canada, travelled from Ottawa for the cleanup and Lancaster skipper Wayne Woods volunteered his 22-foot pontoon boat as a dive launch and barge. The volunteer divers hauled up, among other trash, tires, a rug, bottles, metal debris, and building materials. The good news is that divers found less underwater debris than expected on the first Great River Cleanup visit to Lancaster Wharf and Glengarry Cairn.
