Laggan ladies take semifinal lead on extra time goal
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor On a Tuesday humid evening on the Lochiel pitch, 90 minutes of scoreless soccer meant game one of the Glengarry Soccer League’s senior women’s semifinal opener between Laggan and Char-Lan FC would need extra time to decide matters.
But it didn’t take long to decide the July 31 contest.
Just four minutes into the additional period of play, Laggan had a corner kick opportunity. The ball sailed into a crowded goal box, careening off bodies, before Jen Stewart was able to knock it into the net for the 1-0 win.
Throughout the match, the teams traded scoring opportunities. Early in the second half, Laggan keeper Victoria Villalba made two solid stops to keep Char-Lan off the scoresheet. At the other end of the field, the Black Shirts had a territorial edge, but shots missed the mark or found the arms of goalie Rylee Leger.
Game two of this series was scheduled to be played last night, Aug. 7, at North Lancaster Park. Check our website sportsintheglens.com for an update.
