Greenfield looks to upset top-ranked Vankleek Hill
The Glengarry Soccer League’s senior men’s championship finals, a best-of-three series, kicks off tonight, Aug. 22, in Greenfield, where the hosts will battle the top-ranked men from Vankleek Hill.
Best during the regular season, Vankleek Hill dropped just two of their 12 matches, while Greenfield finished third in the five-team division.
In the semifinals, Vankleek Hill clobbered Dunvegan, outscoring them 13 to 1 in a two-game sweep.
Greenfield had a tougher go of it, but managed to get past McCrimmon in two hard-fought contests, the second of which went into extra time to decide matters.
Game two of the final series will be played in Vankleek Hill, on the VCI pitch, on Friday, Aug. 24, with division awards presented at the conclusion of the match.
Should a third game be needed, it will go Aug. 29 in Vankleek Hill.
Recent years have been good
to the Greenfield men, with the team having made each of the last 10 final series, under coach James McIntosh. The squad has won 6 of the last 9 GSL championships, an impressive achievement.
McIntosh says he will be stepping aside at the end of this season, adding that a number of the Greenfield players are also expected to retire from playing at the senior level.
