Vankleek Hill tops Alexandria in GSL U14 girls soccer thriller
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor It seemed fitting that the Glengarry Soccer League’s top two teams in the U14 girls division would meet for the season championship, as the Alexandria Devils collided with the young ladies from Vankleek Hill, in an Aug. 23 winner-take-all final.
Alexandria was the regular-season victor, with 30 points (on a record of 10 wins and 2 losses), while Vankleek Hill had just one fewer point (9 wins, 2 ties, 1 loss).
In one meeting during the summer, the Grey Shirts scored a 1-0 victory.
In semifinal play, both teams blanked their respective opponents, with the Devils spanking Dunvegan 4-0, while Vankleek Hill edged past Laggan 1-0.
The title tilt, played at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria, saw the hosts pot an early marker, with Grey pushing hard through the remainder of the opening half to find the equalizer.
Eventually, they capitalized on the pressure, as a booming shot found the net, past the goalkeeper’s outstretched mitts just before the interval.
Ten minutes into the second half, the visitors took the lead, as a free kick found its way over the wall.
Alexandria responded quickly, though, as mere moments later, the Devils tied the affair at 2-2, with a chip shot from in tight.
Play settled down from there, with the squads remaining tied at full time.
Two 10-minute overtime sessions still couldn’t decide the winner, though it wasn’t for lack of trying, as the action featured several heart-stopping moments at both ends of the pitch.
So it was on to a shootout, as what turned out to be a marathon of penalty kicks would determine the champion.
It took 10 rounds, until Vankleek Hill finally prevailed, winning the shootout 4-3, as the game officially went into the books as a 3-2 win for Grey.
