Two Cornwall Community Hospital staff members have completed research under the guidance of the Mount Sinai Health System, well known for its expertise in caring for the elderly.
Mandy Lane, a mental health counsellor, and occupational therapist Sylvie Thauvette Legros, from the Geriatric Day Hospital, participated in a study at the Reitman Centre for Alzheimer’s Support and Training. The Coaching, Advocacy, Respite, Education, Relationship, Simulation program is led by Dr. Joel Sadavoy, a leading authority on geriatric mental health. It is the only centre of its kind in Canada dedicated to comprehensive care for caregivers of patients with dementia.
CCH representatives and community stakeholders from the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District, and Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) participated in a post-program focus group led by Dr. Mary Chiu, to discuss program impact and dissemination opportunities for the CARERS program in Cornwall and surrounding communities.
The program could fill a gap in the area, as clinicians observed that with enhanced knowledge, problemsolving techniques, caregiving competence and emotional well-being, family caregivers may be better prepared for and sustained in their role. The focus group also considered different strategies, for example, by adapting the face-to-face group onto a live-streaming videoconferencing platform.
