Tier 2 women’s soccer title on the line

The Glengarry News - - Sports In The Glens - Sean Bray

For the first time, there are playoffs for the tier 2 women’s division of the Glengarry Soccer League, with the champion to be crowned tonight, in Vankleek Hill.

Tops through the course of the regular season, the host side finished the campaign with 28 points, four better than Laggan, the other team qualifying to battle for the playoff title.

Last week, in one-game knockout semifinals, Laggan edged third-ranked Char-Lan, 3-2.

Michelle Fontaine led the charge for the winning side, with a pair of goals, while Josee Lavigueur added one.

Char-Lan’s tallies were notched by Shonna Atcheson and Christine Sandilands.

Vankleek won its semi more handily, blanking Dunvegan 3-0, on goals from Kyla Burwash, Cynthia Wever, and Keri Albright.

The one-game final, tonight, will be played

under the lights on the pitch at VCI, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

In past years, the tier 2 women’s division of the GSL was one where standings were not kept and games were played for fun.

A vote at last fall’s annual general meeting changed that, instituting competitive play for the 2018 season, following what the tier 2 men have had in place for many years.
