‘A new low,’ asleep at the switch
Readers object to the October 25 front page photo of murder victim Émilie Maheu, and Brandon Smeltzer, who has been charged with first-degree murder. The Editor, Are you people asleep at the switch? How could you possibly think that people in our communities want to see the face of the monster who has admitted to the crime, next to the Mommy of baby Elizabeth? Who is important here? Emilie! And Elizabeth! And their family. Not him. Surely Facebook must have been able to provide you with a better choice of photographs. has set a new low in journalism with the picture of Smeltzer on the front page of last week’s Or was it to show him with his victim as he was planning the horrible act and this week will we presented with a photo of the murderer standing over his unfortunate victim? Very upsetting. Art Buckland, Martintown The Editor, The brutal murder of young Emilie Maheu was a devastating tragedy for her daughter, her family, her friends and co-workers and the communities where she lived and worked.
The tribute to Emilie held at the Grotto was a beautiful way for Glengarrians to share their sorrow and to show their support for the family. That being said, I found it appalling that would use, on the front page no less, a “happy” picture of Emilie with the monster who has admitted to ending her young life, leaving a baby without a mother and a family without a daughter, sister, granddaughter and cousin.
Did you not consider the feelings of her family, friends and co-workers? Could you not have found a “happy” picture of Emilie not standing beside her murderer?
The editor of lapse in good judgement.
