The Editor, On February 14, the Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) announced the finalists for the 2018 Better Newspaper Competition Awards (BNC).
The BNC awards program celebrates the very best in community newspapers across Ontario and provides a platform to recognize the outstanding work performed by our local newspapers.
I’m chuffed to announce that won an honourable mention for Best Photo Layout for our 2018 Glengarry Highland Games cover page. The award is judged on a number of criteria including layout and design, quality of photography, impact and reader interest, as well as originality.
First and foremost, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to our publisher Richard Mahoney and Senior Reporter and Editor Steve Warburton who were not only the first to welcome me into the fold but who trusted this “cub reporter” with covering the most important event of the year. I’m not going to lie, being responsible for covering something so massive, so important to our economy, and so connected to our sense of self and local identities was overwhelming.
While I’d worked in writing and communications for more than 15 years, this was my first experience working as a reporter. Over the course of the summer, Richard and Steve were always ready and willing to let me bounce story ideas off them during our weekly editorial meetings. Richard usually took on the role of devil’s advocate while Steve provided guidance and support helping to make each story better by giving me a gentle push in the right direction.
