Men’s semis set for Thursday
The Glengarry Soccer League’s senior men’s division one-game knockout semifinals will be played at the dome in Alexandria, on Thursday, March 14.
Figuring out the team match-ups required a bit of math, as three of the four squads ended the regular season tied at 31 points.
According to the GSL constitution, goal differential is used to break the deadlock atop the table..
By that measure, the Bar Flies get first place, at +16, ahead of Alexandria FC (+15), which officially finished second, and McCrimmon (+7) in third.
In looking at head-to-head play over the course of the regular season, Alexandria FC had a record of 4-2 against the Bar Flies and was 3-2 versus McCrimmon. The Bar Flies and McCrimmon split six meetings.
Pine Grove ended the campaign in fourth place, and as such, will take on the Bar Flies in Thursday’s first semifinal, at 7:30 p.m.
In the five regular-season meetings between the clubs, the Bar Flies swept, collectively outscoring Pine Grove 25 to 10.
The second semi will feature Alexandria FC and McCrimmon, at 8:30 p.m.
Winners will advance to the best-of-three championship series, scheduled for March 21 and 28, kicking off both nights at 7:30 p.m. Should a third match be needed, it will be played at a later date. Bar Flies 5-3, on the strength of goals from Matthew Watts ( 2), Shawn Vink, Rony Odermatt, and Bryce Fraser. Kenny MacMillan scored all three for the Flies.
The evening’s other contest saw Pine Grove take down Alexandria FC 6-2.
Andrew Caputo notched a hat trick for the winning side, with other goals from Connor Allard-Remenda, Hugh Macleod, and Colin Webster.
Sullivan Van Loon and Yale Chadsey scored for Alexandria.
