Earth Day Tree Giveaway returns

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s annual Earth Day Tree Giveaway will be held April 27 starting at 10 a.m.

This year marks the event’s 20year anniversary taking place at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area and Marina Complex at 18045 County Road 2, Cornwall.

To celebrate, 2,000 free trees will be given away and attendees are invited to join the RRCA for a BBQ lunch and cake.

Local vendors and partners will also be in attendance with booths to join in on the celebration.

“We look forward to our annual Earth Day Tree Giveaway where we can answer any questions the public may have about their upcoming tree planting projects. We hope the 10 free white spruce given out to the first 200 households in attendance helps kick start their property enhancements this year,” says Normand Génier, RRCA’s Forestry Specialist.

As a limited quantity of trees will be available, they will be distributed on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Whether you are planning a windbreak, want to attract more wildlife, or simply add to your existing landscape, trees provide numerous esthetic and environmental benefits.

“With the loss of ash trees in the region due to the invasive emerald ash borer and overall forest cover loss, the Earth Day Tree Giveaway provides an excellent opportunity to pick up some replacements and improve local forest cover,” adds Mr. Génier.

The RRCA offers tree planting subsidies for landowners with greater than one hectare (2.5 acres) of open land.

The RRCA has partnered with Forests Ontario under the 50 Million Tree Program, which aims to plant 50 million trees in Ontario by the year 2025. The program offers trees and the RRCA’s full-service program at a reduced rate.

Eligible landowners may receive up to 75 per cent coverage of total planting costs through the Program.

While the trees, food, and refreshments are free, donations will be accepted on-site. Larger potted trees will also be available for purchase.

There will also be a silent auction for donated items from various local businesses.

The funds from donations, potted tree sales, and the silent auction will be allocated towards the RRCA’s forestry programs.
