Wednesday, April 3, 2019 was a night Gabriel Brunet will not soon forget. That evening, he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer Second Class. WO2 Brunet is a member of the 253 Claude Nunney VC Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in South Glengarry.
A promotion to a rank of Warrant Officer comes after a Merit Review Board interviews a cadet, reviews his or her file and determines if the candidate is eligible and suitable for a senior cadet promotion. Candidates must have completed their level 5 training, have been successful in their previous ranks, demonstrated strong qualities of leadership and be willing to lead by example.
The promotion was made after the board’s recommendation to Commanding Officer, Major Sandy McDonald. With the promotion comes additional responsibilities as ranks in the cadet program are modelled after the Non-Commissioned Member ranks of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Within the CAF, promotions are made to deserving and eligible members who are capable of taking on additional responsibilities and leadership taskings.
WO2 Brunet, a resident of Lancaster, has been this year’s biathlon team captain, motivating new cadets to try a sport they have never even heard of.
He is active in the squadron’s Exertion team and a member of the newly formed Glengarry Cadet Drill Team.
He is also an instructor at the squadron, teaching junior cadets topics such as aviation, healthy and active living, citizenship and survival skills.
He is also an individual who keeps community at heart, volunteering for every and any opportunity that arises including road clean up, Santa Claus parades, caroling, the Kilt Skate and Wreaths Across Canada.
MOVING UP: Warrant Officer Second Class Gabriel Brunet was promoted at 253 Claude Nunney VC Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Lancaster by Major Sandy McDonald, Area Elemental Advisor-Air for the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Area.
