Investing in our planet
The Editor, Were you one of those who donated money on March 31 at church to Development and Peace (D+P)? Bravo! You’ve invested in saving our planet from annihilation.
B+P is one of nine organizations that have a seat on the Governing Committee of Project Ploughshares (PP). An additional four persons sit on the committee as members-at-large.
But when PP in 2018 published their latest report, 20 pages long for 2017 the seat of D+P was vacant, the only one vacant.
Since the survival of all the other activities of D+P depends on disarming nuclear weapons is D+P now actively participating in PP?
PP also does urgent work to demilitarize space to stop autonomous weapons and armed conflicts and to help refugees and forced migrants.
85% of Christians in Canada are denominations that belong to the Canadian Council of Churches (CCC). PP is an operating division of CCC. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops are members of CCC and thus part of the work of PP.
When Colette Sauvé appealed in the March 27 issue of for donations to D+P she should have printed out that whatever money D+P spends on PP could help divert some of the billions of dollars that are now spent on billing machines: divert toward the prevention of the problems and injustices that D+P tries to solve. Let’s all re-think our priorities in these increasingly dangerous times.
