30 animals perish in barn fire
A fund-raising drive has been started to help a Dalkeith area family who lost about 30 animals in a barn fire early Friday morning.
Some 19 beef cattle and nine horses perished in the blaze which started at about 3 a.m. May 3 in a barn located on Linda and Wayne Lothian’s Windy Park farm, located at 1215 D’Aoust Road, west of Lochinvar Road. Nobody was injured in the fire. The cause of the blaze had not been immediately determined but it is believed to have been related to an electrical defect, North Glengarry Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Roy said.
“The building was fully involved when firefighters arrived,” he said. All four sides of the barn were in flames when about 50 firefighters from North Glengarry began battling the blaze. They were backed by about 15 Vankleek Hill fire brigade members.
A water shuttle service was used to transport water from Alexandria to the scene.
