“It is a step in the right direction,” says Alexandria race walker Bob Hardy as he prepares to lead another “Walk for Life” June 9.

Beginning at 8:45 a.m. from Tim Hortons in Alexandria, participants will walk to Glen Robertson and return to Alexandria. A fivekilometre walk in town will start at 12:30 p.m. in Mill Square.

Last month’s initial outing drew 13 participants.

The “casual” and “sociable” event is meant to get people moving and discover the benefits of walking.

Mr. Hardy completed the recent Ottawa Marathon as he marked the 22nd anniversary of his bone marrow transplant and raised for the bone marrow transplant unit at the Ottawa General Hospital.

His time of 5 hours, 31 minutes and eight seconds was four minutes slower than his 2018 time.

He was pleased with the result considering that at 29 kilometres, “I hit the wall, spun off the road and landed on the grass bank.” Plus the bars on his walker broke and he fought cramps for the final five kilometres.

HE’S OK: Bob Hardy met The Lumberjack, Nick Jankowski, at the Ottawa Marathon.
