There is a healthy variety of aquatic life thriving below the surface of Alexandria’s of Mill Pond.

The diversity of water species was underlined when North Glengarry began its annual removal of aquatic vegetation from the pond in Island Park. Over the course of 30 hours, the weed harvester brought in 64 tonnes of material. And not all of the haul consisted of unwanted weeds.

The harvester also caught 29 sunfish, 21 catfish, 11 perch, a pike and two snapping turtles. All but three sunfish and one catfish were returned to the water, according to a report presented to council by Anne Leduc, director of community services.

The harvester cuts and collects weeds which are gathered and composted off site.
