Huge tobacco bust
The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) arrested two suspects and seized more than 700 kilograms of contraband tobacco following operations along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River in South Glengarry on July 7.
CRTF members were on patrol when they spotted a boat without its navigation lights on, travelling at a high rate of speed. Shortly thereafter, the vessel made landfall in the Bainsville area, where its occupants unloaded several large garbage bags into a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck. However, when two suspects in the truck attempted to leave with their illicit cargo, police intercepted the vehicle.
During a subsequent search of the truck, officers discovered 40 bags containing 704 kilograms of unstamped fine cut tobacco, leading to the arrests of Nicolas Primeau, 27, and Sébastien Soulières, 33 – both of Havelock, Que.
Mr. Primeau and Mr. Soulières, both of whom were charged with possession of unstamped tobacco (under the federal Excise Act), and also may be charged under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act, are scheduled to appear in Cornwall court on September 10.
