Orig­i­nally ti­tled The Vic­tims, in keeping with the ghost-like pro­ces­sion it de­picted, Kennington re­named the work af­ter ob­jec­tions from the bat­tal­ion’s com­mand­ing of­fi­cer, Lieu­tenant-Colonel Cy Peck.
