Goderich Flyers Update
The Goderich Orr Insurance Flyers of the Provincial Junior Hockey League will play the opening home game of their Pollock Division schedule at the MRC with a 7:30 pm start Saturday night against the Walkerton Hawks.
The road in the preseason has not been an easy one for head coach Chris Corbett, his assistants, and the team executive
With the no-ice policy at the Memorial Arena and problems with the ice plant at the MRC, the team has lost valuable practice time and had their only home exhibition game wiped out, making the team selection process more difficult, but the Flyers will be ready for their home opener Saturday, according to Corbett.
They open their schedule in Wingham Friday night against the Ironmen before their home-ice debut Saturday.
The Flyers played their final exhibition encounter of the preseason last Saturday in Mount Forest where they dropped a 6-3 verdict to the Patriots. In that game the Flyers held a 2-1 lead after the first period on the strength of goals by Jeff Fritzley and Chad Treble. Fritzley’s goal came on a rebound off a shot by Eric Vander Eyk. Treble tapped in a sharp pass from Mac Smith, with Hayden Benniwies garnering the second assist.
The Patriots scored four unanswered goal in the second period and the teams each scored once in the final frame.
The Goderich goal was the result of Bayden Parent’s tip-in of a low point shot by Braeden Duncan. Mac Smith got the other assist on the goal. The Flyers got good efforts from returning players Mitch Fisher, Matt Bean and Noah Nurse. Several other Flyer returnees were not dressed for the game. Kyle Dunlap and Branden Bean shared the goaltending duties and gave good efforts in the Flyer’s net.
Players signed so far by the Flyers include goalie Kyle Dunlap, defencemen Griffen MacDonald, Brad Watson, Brennan Long, and Hayden Benniwies ,the younger brother of former Flyer captain Morgan Benniwies, and forwards Chad and Cody Treble, Jacob Kirton, Trent Michie, Eric Vander Eyk, Riley Conners, Jeff Fritzley, Noah Nurse, Chase Meurs, Matt Bean and Mitch Fisher. Other signings were expected following last weekend’s practice.
