Ian Toms take stage at Trailside Café

-

Jazz guitarist Ian Toms will be relaunching his new album, Playbook, on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Trailside Café in Mount Stewart.

The album was released this past summer in Charlottetown, but this will be the first concert to fully showcase the material.

A graduate of McGill’s Masters in jazz program, Toms has performed with many jazz luminaries, including Phil Woods, Doug Riley and Pat Labarbera. Critics have described him as an “exceedingly fine player, fluid, very tasteful and adventurous without being showy.”

Toms’ first album, Open, earned two Music P. E. I. awards, and his work as a sideman has been featured on several ECMA- nominated projects and over a dozen Music P. E. I. awards. This latest album features a guitar, bass and drums trio, swinging through tunes by composers as diverse as Riley, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, George Gershwin and Radiohead.

Toms will be joined by two of the Island’s finest and busiest musicians, drummer Alan Dowling and bassist Deryl Gallant. This duo worked for years as the rhythm section for the ECMA- winning group, The Jive Kings, and they have both played with everyone from Matt Minglewood to Measha Burggergosman.

Dowling is currently the head of the Music Performance program at Holland College and Gallant serves as the bass instructor at UPEI.

Doors and the kitchen at the Trailside Café open at 6: 30 p. m. with music starting at 8 p. m. Go to www. trailside. ca for information and ticket links or call 676- 3130 for
