Field set at CDP for Atlantic Aged Mares final; Open trotters invading Summerside Sunday

- Compiled by Lee Drake, manager of marketing and sales for Red Shores

JK Special has drawn the rail in the Atlantic Aged Mares Pacing Series final, presented by Standardbred Canada and Red Shores, today at the Charlottetown Driving Park. Post time is 6 p. m. Walter Cheverie will drive the daughter of Cammibest for trainer Joe Smallwood and leaves beside favourite General Luckypercy ( Post 2) for trainer Jackie Matheson.

Matheson handles the conditioning duties for his sister Jodilyn Shepherd of Cambridge, Ont., and Jack Brown of Stratford.

Gilles Barrieau will be in town to drive General Luckypercy, who is riding a three- race winning streak.

Barrieau shook loose from the back of the pack to win by a half- length in her last start in an impressive 1: 56.1 to keep the streak alive.

The other bank roller is Private Joke with $ 17, 125 earned so far this season for owners Wade Peconi, Breadalbane, Windemere Farms and John Howatt.

The Earl Watts trainee has the services of Gary Chappell from Post 6. The star lineup also includes Elm Grove Future, Charlottes Maggie, Dreaming and Shooters Bay.

The card also carries two divisions of the Maritime Breeders Eliminations for three- year- old trotters.

Majian Dillion, fresh off an Atlantic Breeders Crown victory last weekend, and Est Non Ila Dulcis from the Buntainwood Farm in Brackley Beach are favourites in their respective divisions.

On Sunday at the Summerside Raceway, the Open trotters will headline the 1 p. m., 12- race card which features Waiting on a Woman, who has won his last two starts since arriving home from the Ontario circuit.

Brodie MacPhee has been assigned that task from trainer Mitch Tierney who co- owns with David Tierney of Cornwall.

It won’t be easy as Saulsbrook Balance and Willie Murphy leave from Post 7 and they finished a strong second to Waiting on a Woman. Trainer Cindy MacDonald has also entered Diamond Mine with Mark Cullen listed to drive.

Meanwhile Caliban Hanover is known for his finishing touch. Ron Gass will do the driving for Wendell MacDonald of Cornwall.

Former Stakes star Scarlett Patti, with Darrel MacLean, will be tough and Hall Trot, driven by Todd Walsh, has been part of the ticket in the Open division, too.

War Cry Ranger and Brian Andrew have landed on the cones for the $ 1,600 event in Race 11.

Race analyst Jared Stretch has taken Beechwood Tiger as his top choice.

“He been no worse than second in his last four races,” said Stretch. “That’s really something when you consider the talent he’s been racing against.”

The Summerside analyst is going with 2 ( Beechwood Tiger) 3 ( BJ Cruiser) and 7 ( Sparky Bayama).

Narragansett, Instant Fantasy, McMaverick and JJ Maywest complete the powerpacked field.

Pictonian Espresso is the morning line favourite in the P. E. I. Preserve Company Pace in Race 9. Jason Hughes will do the driving for Summerside’s leading trainer Blaine McKenna.
