UPEI, Mount Allison battle to 1- 1 draw in the rain and mud

- BY FRED FOSTER

SACKVILLE, N. B. — Friday’s men’s soccer game at Mount Allison would have brought back memories of pre- artificial turf days with rain and mud up to your ankles.

A 1- 1 draw left both teams with the feeling that their side should have won.

UPEI came out in the first half having the greater margin of play and were rewarded in the 21st minute when midfielder Adam Lowther hammered home a short seven- yard drive from a scramble off a corner kick. Panther passing had the Mounties scrambling but the Panthers failed to capitalize on any more of their chances.

The Mounties came out strong in the second half and with the deteriorating field conditions, the Panther passing attack disappeared and the Mounties took over creating their chances.

Finally in the 61st minute the inevitable happened as Connor McCumber created his own opportunity and found side netting on a nice 20- yard drive.

With less than two minutes UPEI keeper Trevor White came out on a for sure goal, preserving the tie.

The Panthers outshot the Mounties 15- 12 and outchanced then 8- 5. Mount A outfouled UPEI 9- 4 with UPEI having the edge in corner kicks, 12- 3.

“You have to give Mount A full credit for coming back to tie us,’’ said coach Lewis Page. “I probably did a little too much tinkering with the line up that got our team out of rhythm.’’

UPEI are in Halifax this afternoon to face the Dalhousie Tigers.
