Red Devils, Kings kick off season in Montague

The Pownal Irving Oil Red Devils and the Kings County Irving Oil Kings will kick off the P. E. I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League season Sunday in Montague.

It will be a rematch of last year’s final won by the Red Devils.

Game time is 7: 10 p. m. at the Cavendish Wellness Centre.

The Kings will host the 2013 Irving Oil Challenge Cup from March 21 to 24.

“Kings County has a long and proud hockey history and we are looking forward to this area showcasing its hockey past and hosting the best bantam- aged players in the Atlantic region,” said league co- ordinator Rudy Croken.

The provincial associatio­n is also looking forward to the prestigiou­s event.

“Every year, the Irving Oil Challenge Cup has been one of the premier events of the Atlantic Championsh­ip circuit,” said Hockey P. E. I. past president Gene Power.

The league’s seven teams are expected to be very competitiv­e.

Charlottet­own, which went undefeated in the recent jamboree played at the APM Centre in Cornwall, is expected to be very competitiv­e. With 12 secondyear players in the lineup, the Abbies should be a well- balanced team.

The Summerside entry also went undefeated at the jamboree and while young the Capitals are expected to be contenders.

The Mid Isle Matrix will feature a combinatio­n of first- and second- year bantams and will open their season against the Summerside Irving Oil Capitals in Kensington Tuesday at 7: 30 p. m. The Matrix defeated Pownal in its only pre- season exhibition game.

The Western Maroons will open their season Friday, Oct. 19, against Sherwood. Both teams attended the jamboree with Western coming away with three ties while Sherwood went 1- 2.

Admission prices for the games are $ 3 for adults; free for seniors, students and preschoole­rs; a $ 5 family rate is also available.
