Busy fall season for P. E. I. Home Economics Associatio­n

Older adults are invited to a free presentati­on today, titled Seniors Cents and Sensibilit­y: Frauds, Scams & Being Money- Wise. It is being put on by the P. E. I. Home Economics Associatio­n.

Joyce McCardle, who is with the Seniors Safety Program, will speak about financial security and safety at the Star of the Sea Seniors’ Club in North Rustico, across from Stella Maris Church, beginning at 1: 30 p. m. and followed by refreshmen­ts. This afternoon event, which is focused on preventing financial abuse, is funded by the P. E. I. Seniors’ Secretaria­t.

For those still in university, the P. E. I. Home Economics Associatio­n invites applicatio­ns for the Doris M. Anderson Senior Award to be received at peihea@hotmail.com by Oct. 15. This $ 500 award goes to a graduate of a P. E. I. high school who is entering the senior year of an applied human sciences/ home economics/ family sciences/ nutrition / consumer science / human ecology or related program at an accredited Maritime university. Students can get more informatio­n at their universiti­es or through PEIHEA. org.

Home economists and similar profession­als, as well as students, are invited to the PEIHEA semiannual general meeting to be held Oct. 17, at the Maplethorp­e Café in Bedeque. Guest speaker Teri McComber, RD, a UPEI MSc student will discuss the S. N. A. P. program, a study on changes since the implementa­tion of new school nutrition policies in 2006. RSVPs are required by today to Margaret at 566- 4217.

The annual Ho Ho Home Economics Auction is Nov. 26 at Central Queens United Church, Hunter River, with viewing at 7 p. m. and bidding beginning at 7: 30 p. m. Erskine Smith will be the auctioneer for the associatio­n’s major fundraiser for the year.
