Caps’ new ownership group unveiled

SUMMERSIDE — The Summerside Western Capitals officially announced their new ownership group Thursday at Credit Union Place.

The 11 owners, all local businessme­n, have registered a new company called P. E. I. Sports and Entertainm­ent to manage the Caps.

Dave Groom, who will serve as president, said he was excited the Caps would be returning to Summerside after being on shaky ground all summer.

“It’s a situation where we thought, as a business community, that we wanted to make sure we retained that team in the local area. And the best way to do that was to pull some entreprene­urs together to continue that tradition the Caps have establishe­d over the years,” he said.

Since the end of last year’s successful season, in which the Caps finished second in the country at The following is a list of owners and their most prominent business affiliatio­ns: – Dave Groom, team president and owner of Quality Inn & Suites and Brothers 2. – Mike James, team governor, owner of Castle Building Supplies Prince County. – Danny Perry, vice- president of communicat­ion & marketing, and owner of Colours Signs. – Aaron Doyle, president of the Summerside Rec Hockey League and operations manager of Greco Pizza in Prince and Queens Counties. – Ryan Simmonds, longtime Caps’ supporter and community leader in Kensington. – Clair Sudsbury, management consultant. – Darren Cousins, co- owner and operator of Twin Shores Camping Area. – Terry Peters, owner operator T& K Home Improvemen­t and agent with Royal LePage of Summerside. – Blake MacKay, co- owner Mid- Isle Electric. – Mario Sham, China Star Restaurant. – Mark O’Keefe, vice- president of finance at Vector Aerospace. the RBC Cup, the team has faced a change in ownership, a potential move from Summerside and the loss of former head coach Billy McGuigan, who accepted a position with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League.

have now been ironed out, just in time for the first home game of the regular season on Sunday.

The Caps also announced on Thursday that it had signed an agreement with the city to keep the team here for the next five seasons.
