Islanders looking to regain Maritime Cup

Provincial pride will be on the line this weekend at the Mill River Golf Course.

Twelve players from each of the four Atlantic provinces will be competing Saturday and Sunday the Mel Murray Maritime Cup.

“It’s as competitive golf as there is in the country,” said Tim Yorke, who is captaining Prince Edward Island’s team. “Players are as nervous as they are standing at the national tee.”

The Island’s top eight players based on points gained through tournament play this summer make the team. The captain selects the remaining four players. The event is not open to junior players.

Competition for roster spots is fierce, Yorke said.

“The interest level on The following is Prince Edward Island’s team for the Mel Murray Maritime Cup this weekend at the Mill River Golf Course: Tim Yorke Martin O’Brien Cody MacKay Adam Constable P. E. I. is considerable. The guys are really looking forward to playing,” Yorke said. “They’re just absolutely hyped up about it. . . The guys can’t wait to get going.”

The event has been played for about a dozen years with Mill River hosting for about half of the events. Summerside and Fox Meadow have also hosted the tournament.

The event was played last year in Saint Andrews, N. B., with Nova Scotia stopping Dave Shellington Brodie Ward Willie O’Brien Jason Campbell Brodie MacGregor Kyle Fraser Kris Currie Steve Gamester the Island’s streak.

Newfoundland and Labrador joined the event last year and are back again this year.

Yorke said playing for your home province provides lots of pride, but he has also told his teammates to relax and remember to have fun.

“I told them, ‘ I know you’re going to try your hardest,’” he said.

Each player competes in

three- year win the three- round event. Saturday morning is best ball, Saturday afternoon is alternate shot and Sunday is the single’s event. The best- ball format is worth twice as many points as the other two events. Friday used to be a practice round, but it has been changed to a singles tournament with the results not counting towards the Maritime Cup.
