To mark its 100th anniversary, the P. E. I. Women’s Institute is taking part of the Annual Fall Flavours Festival in a P. E. I. Culinary Kitchen Party — Celebrating 100 years of Women’s Institute on P. E. I.
The festive food affair takes place on the evening of Sept. 22, at the New London Community Complex.
Entertainment starts at 6: 30 p. m. Dinner will follow. Tickets are $ 60, plus HST and are available online at www. fallflavours.ca or at the PEIWI office, 40 Enman Cres., Charlottetown. Proceeds are to go to the Red Cross.
Islanders and visitors are invited to experience a traditional bountiful buffet of the best of P. E. I.’ s gardens, farms and sea. Chef Calvin Burt will offer a distinct P. E. I.- flavoured culinary journey, while musician Eddy Quinn will delight all with Island musical favorites.
Seafood from local waters, meats from Island farms and produce from the field will highlight this evening of music and merry making in recognition of 100 years of Women’s Institute on Prince Edward Island.
Burt, owner operator of Ship- wright’s Café located in a restored 1880s farmhouse in Margate, built his passion for fresh, organic ingredients into a reputation as one of the Island’s top restaurants.
What he doesn’t raise himself, Burt sources from neighbours, growers and organic suppliers.
Burt is described as a gardener who cooks or a cook who gardens, depending on where you find him. He spends the off- season furthering his knowledge of organic gardening.
A true taste of the season is offered based on what is available on any given day.
“Experiment with your tastes and food,” he says.
“I encourage people to get growing fresh herbs outside their door. There’s no end to what you can do with them.”
Quinn, will round out the evening with performances before and after dinner. Quinn, a popular Island performer who hails from Cardigan, won the recent 2013 country recording of the year at the Music P. E. I. Awards for his album entitled Rememory.
