Canada Remember Chorus to perform at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church

-

St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown will host the Canada Remembers Chorus in concert on Sunday, Nov. 10, 7 p. m., to commemorate Veterans Week.

Formed in the late spring of 1994, the chorus is made up of current and former employees of Veterans Affairs Canada who love to sing.

The chorus took its name and its raison d’être from the Canada Remembers Program, a special initiative that was sponsored by the government of Canada in 1994- 95 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Second World War and the great part that Canadians played - both on the battlefront and the homefront — during those eventful times.

In keeping with that spirit, the volunteer chorus drew selections from the rich musical heritage of that time period for its earliest performances.

With several hundred performances to date, the chorus continues to perform at special events on the Veterans Affairs’ calendar. However, its main focus is to reach the community of seniors and veterans who reside on Prince Edward Island. Visits to seniors’ homes, nursing homes and participation at community or military events of a commemorative nature have become the norm.

Reaching out to youth is also an important aspect of the chorus’s mandate. During Veterans Week each year, the chorus travels to elementary schools throughout the province to perform and participate in their Remembrance Day events.

Through music, the Canada Remembers Chorus wishes to recognize and applaud the efforts of all past and present Canadian Forces Members who have served this country so well during the past century. Since its initial performance in 1994, the chorus has greatly broadened its repertoire to include appropriate music that was popular from the time of the South African War through to today.

Under the direction of Darragh Mogan and accompanied by Helen MacRae, the Canada Remembers Chorus will present a selection of evocative musical memories.

There will be no admission charged, but a free- will offering will be received. For information, call St. Mark’s, which is located on the corner of Brackley Point Road and Pine Drive, at 892- 5255.
