Brewers, Bombers open KCBL playoffs with wins, Athletics clinch first place

Northside Gill Constructi­on Inc. Brewers and the Peakes Bombers won opening playoff games while P.E.I. Brewing Company Athletics clinched first place Wednesday in the Kings County Baseball League.

Following is a recap of the games: Brewers 9, Jays 3 The Northside Brewers broke open a tied game with four runs in the third inning en route to a 9-3 win over the Charlottet­own Jays.

With the score tied at one in the bottom of the third, D.J. Dunn provided the clutch RBI base hit and Kevin MacLeod followed up with a two-run double as the Brewers went up 5-1. It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth with the Brewers adding on four more runs, keyed by Ethan Laybolt’s two-run double.

Mitchell Ryan hit 4-for-4 with three doubles, MacLeod was 2-for-2 and Dustin Larkin 2-for-3 to lead the Brewers.

Jason MacLean pitched the complete game with seven strikeouts for the win.

Mike Roberts led the way for the Jays with two doubles while Brodie Hughes and Greg Stapleton both hit 1-for-2.

Blair Creelman suffered the loss with relief from Jeremy Keoughan.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series is Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Field. Bombers 10, Sluggers 0 Colin Myers’ walk-off, threerun homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Peakes Bombers a 10-0 win over the Peakes Tee Sluggers after the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Rob Phelan pitched a twohitter for the win while the Bombers tacked on 11 hits off losing pitcher Bruce Jay.

Myers (3-3), Joe Gardiner (13 with a two-run homer), Matt Bradley, Rob Phelan and Trevor McAree, all with two hits, led the Bombers.

Connor Myers and Carter MacLellan had the Sluggers’ hits.

Game 2 will be announced later. Athletics 8, Chevies 7 The Athletics scored two unearned in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Morell Chevies 8-7 to complete a game that was suspended from the weekend.

Corey Douguay pitched three inning of solid relief to pick up the win while Quen Johnston took the loss.

Troy Coffin drove in the goahead run in top of the ninth but Douguay struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded to get of the jam.

Douguay also drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
