Island squads defeat Yukon

P.E.I. playing in seeding round today at junior championsh­ips

Prince Edward Island scored three triples Tuesday to defeat Yukon 10-4 in eight ends at the Canadian junior men’s curling championsh­ip in Stratford, Ont.

The Matthew MacLeanski­pped rink from the Maple Leaf and Cornwall curling clubs counted three in the second, fourth and eighth end while adding a single in the single. Yukon scored one in the third and three in the fifth.

P.E.I. (2-4), which includes lead Jordan MacLean, second Noah O’Connor and third Alan MacLean, misses out on the championsh­ip round. They will play on in the seeding round to determine rankings for the 2017 championsh­ips.

Women’s

P.E.I.’s women’s team finished with triples in the final two ends to defeat Yukon 11-5 in eight ends.

The Katie Fullerton-skipped rink from the Cornwall Curling Club trailed 1-0 before scoring deuces in the second and third ends to take a 4-1 lead. Yukon scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to one. The Island squad added a single in the fifth before giving up a deuce in the sixth to tie the game 5-5.

P.E.I. (2-4), which includes lead Aleya Quilty, second Sabrina Smith and third Chloe McCloskey, is also in the seeding round.
