Down on the Farm theme for Potato Blossom Festival

Get out a paring knife, grab some potatoes and start cooking.

Then bring that special spud creation to be judged at the potato cooking competition, one of many events planned for the 48th annual P.E.I. Potato Blossom Festival.

The 2016 event takes place in O’Leary from Monday, July 18, to Sunday, July 24, and Susan Shea, chairwoman of the annual event, is expecting plenty of entries on July 22 because “there are lots of things you can do with a potato.”

Prior to 6 p.m. entries have to be brought to the Community Sports Complex where the annual Farmers Banquet takes place at 7 p.m. Prior to the banquet, diners will have an opportunity to sample the prepared potato dishes and vote for their favourite.

Just as there are many ways to prepare P.E.I.’s best known agricultural crop, there are also plenty of other events to enjoy at this year’s festival, which features Down on the Farm as the overall festival theme, as well as the theme for the July 23 Potato Blossom Parade.

Also taking place is the National Potato Peeling Championship. Teams of four will peel through as many potatoes as they can within the time limit.

The youth talent competition takes place at Community Sports Centre on Wednesday, July 20, and the Summerside Chrysler Dodge Adult Singing competition happens there on Saturday evening, July 23.
