Strawberry social in Stratford today

- CONCERT

The Mermaid Women’s Institute is hosting a strawberry social and cake auction today at the Cotton Centre in Stratford, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The annual social is a decades-long tradition, bringing the community together and raising funds to support the WI’s UPEI Scholarship and other community projects.

Enjoy an ice cream sundae served with cookies and squares, tea and coffee and stay for the cake auction and get a homemade cake.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by harpist Joan Woods.

The Lot 7 ceilidhs are set to begin for the 16th season.

A special program will get the series underway on Thursday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m., as Ivan and Vivian Hicks from New Brunswick will be performing at St. Mark’s Hall.

Both performers are distinguished for their contribution to preserve and promote oldtime fiddling throughout North America. Ivan is a member of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and has been playing old-time music for 70 years. His wife, Vivian, has accompanied him on piano for many of those years.

They have won many honours and accolades throughout the years and have both been inducted into the New Brunswick Country Music Hall of Fame.

The evening will be complemented by Frankie MacGregor with his tenor voice and his Lot 7 humour.

He grew up in Burton and now resides in Quebec but returns yearly to his summer home and performs at the annual Lot 7 Ceilidhs occasionally.

The ceilidhs take place at St. Mark’s Hall in Burton, western P.E.I., on Route 14. Interested patrons are advised to call 902859-3211 or 902-859-2504 to reserve a seat, as space is limited.
