CRACKDOWN CONTINUES PROVINCE
RCMP issues 66 charges to motorists Thursday, along with seven warnings
One of the drivers charged Thursday in the second “dynamic police enforcement initiative” was observed by RCMP to be texting while driving 24 km/h over the posted limit.
RCMP and Provincial Highway Safety enforcement officers conducted a second day of early morning targeting of aggressive and distracted driving during the commute.
A laser checkpoint on Highway 2 in Milton near the intersection with Highway 6, resulted in 31 charges for speeding and aggressive driving.
A total of 66 charges were issued Thursday along with seven warnings. Thirteen motorcycles were found to be in compliance with noise legislation.
Three distracted driving offences were also observed and charges laid and three vehicles were towed for having suspended drivers and/or no insurance.
Static checkpoints were also conducted in Clyde River, Cornwall and Oyster Bed Bridge.
A similar initiative was conducted Wednesday morning that resulted in 74 summary offence tickets for speeding and/or aggressive driving being issued along with 17 written warnings and four vehicles towed.
“It’s nice to see the positive comments on social media and gestures from passing motorists ‘in droves’ as they passed by in Milton,” Staff Sergeant Mark Crowther, RCMP Queens district commander, said in a news release.
“It only takes one to cause an accident and that chain reaction can have disastrous consequences ... we see it all too often, and it’s heartbreaking.”
