New technology for Souris Hospital

State-of-the-art diagnostic imaging service to benefit Eastern Kings residents

-

Residents of Eastern Kings now have access to a new digital radiography suite and the best in X-ray technology at Souris Hospital, says Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson.

“This latest addition in diagnostic imaging provides a higher quality of testing that will create a more comfortable and efficient patient experience,” said Henderson.

“It will result in enhanced patient safety and better access to critical health services that Islanders depend on.” The new equipment provides technologists with a better patient view during the imaging process and emits a smaller dose of radiation to the patient, adding to the safety and quality of testing. A more user-friendly elevating table is easier and more comfortable for patients during the procedure.

“We are so pleased to have the latest in digital radiographic technology available in eastern P.E.I.,” said Gailyne MacPherson, provincial director of diagnostic imaging. “Our staff can now perform high-quality imaging exams previously unavailable at Souris Hospital.”

There were 1,747 X-ray procedures done at Souris Hospital in 2015-16, and the more efficient digital equipment will allow even more procedures to be carried out.

Government partnered with the Eastern Kings Health Foundation to purchase the $400,000 digital radiography suite.

“On behalf of the foundation board, I want to extend our sincere appreciation to the individuals, volunteers and businesses that supported our campaign to raise funds for this new suite,” said foundation president David Nicholson.

The provincial government has invested nearly $1 million in diagnostic imaging technology since 2015 in partnership with Island hospital foundations. This includes a new CT scan at Prince County Hospital and new digital X-ray suites at Western Hospital and Community Hospital O’Leary.

Planning is now well underway for the installation of a new $10-million linear accelerator at the P.E.I. Cancer Treatment Centre.
