Students busy with exams, planning for next year

On Jan. 25, the Grade 11 secondary math assessment will be held.

Jan. 25 also marks the beginning of final exams for first semester. They run until Jan. 31. In addition, students and parents are asked to note there will be no cafeteria services during exam week.

Feb. 1 is a turn-around day with no classes, Feb. 2 is the first day of second semester and report cards go home on Feb. 3.

A school council meeting is Jan. 26, 7 p.m. All parents/ guardians are welcome.

The UPEI Pre-Med Society is hosting a health careers conference Jan. 28, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at McDougall Hall, room 242, to provide opportunit­ies for students to learn about a variety of different health career opportunit­ies. Experience­s Canada Exchange (formerly known as SEVEC) is open to all Grade 10 and 11 students and will take place in the 2017-2018 school year. A short informatio­n session is in Mr. Kelly’s room on Jan. 23 at noon.

All first semester exams will be written in the morning, Jan. 25-27 and Jan. 30-31, 9-11:30 a.m., leaving the afternoons for study (in the cafeteria or library) or presentati­ons, seminars, oral, make-up and practical exams.

A parent council meeting is Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. in the library conference room.

Yearbooks must be ordered and $50 paid for by Feb. 17. Order online by using the link on the school’s website or in person at the yearbook office starting the beginning of February.

Grade 11 provincial math assessment­s will be written on Jan. 25. First semester final exams/evaluation­s are on Jan. 26-27 and Jan. 30-31. Schedules are posted, as well as on the school website.

There will be no classes for students on Feb. 1 for a semester turn-around Day. Second semester courses begin Feb. 2.

Students who have applied to universiti­es and colleges should fill in a transcript request form in student services so their first semester final marks can be part of the massive mail out in early February. Doing this now will ensure making the university/college applicatio­n and scholarshi­p deadlines.

Grade 11 or 12 students interested in the community service bursary, where volunteer hours count toward up to a $500 bursary, should register at www.studentloa­n.pe.ca. Applicatio­ns can also be delivered to Student Financial Services in the Atlantic Technology Centre, 175 Great George St., Charlottet­own.

There is a parent council meeting Jan. 24, 7 p.m., in the library.

Westisle is partnering with residents from the O’Leary Manor to come in and spend some time with a few classes. They will be working with the fourth period foods class, helping out in the kitchen. On Jan. 25, they will be visiting the PED801 class to work out in stations that the students have prepared. It is hoped this community connection can continue during second semester.

Exams are Jan. 26-27 and Jan. 30-31. If students are not writing an exam, they do not have to come to school. If they do, they will be in the library studying. Exams start at 8:55 a.m. Students must stay in their class until at least 11 a.m.

Once finished, students can go home, head to the cafeteria to socialize or to the library to study. If there is a one-hour delay, the exam will go as scheduled. If there is a cancellati­on, the exam will be written on the next day back to school.

The Grade 11 math assessment is Jan. 25. No classes for all students not involved in the assessment.

First semester exams are Jan. 26-27 and Jan. 30-31. Exams begin at 9 a.m. The afternoon is reserved for independen­t study and/or help class.

Those students planning to attend a post-secondary institutio­n in the fall should sign up to have their transcript sent in student services on the Destinatio­n of Choice form.

The school was able to raise $2,860 in two days.

Students are asked to return or renew all library materials before exams begin.

Yearbooks for the school year are now on sale. Cost is $45 if they are bought before the end of February and $50 after that date. Check with the office to order.
