Island Comic Con among events at library
In the spring a young person’s fancy turns lightly to thoughts of…comics.
Join us for Island Comic Con on April 28 at 6 p.m. This amazing event will feature a panel discussion with comic book creator Troy Little, Brenda Hickey, Sandy Carruthers, Tyler Landry and Ramon Sierra. Dylan Miller from Lightning Bolt Comics will be on hand to address any of your comic book conundrums. This event also features a comic drawing contest and cosplay (costume) contest and comic products for sale. Please drop off your drawing contest entries before April 28.
Island Comic Con is open to teens and adults (12-plus) and tickets are required (free, of course like all of our events). Some tickets will be available at the door but to make sure you get, in drop in to get them in advance.
As May approaches, thoughts have also turned to nature and the end of the school year. In response the library has teamed up with UPEI Environmental Studies students to present, Environmental Science for the rest of Us! Held today at 7 p.m. it will be an information packed hour of short presentations on the students’ current research. A sample of topics on offer includes contamination of ground water, food sustainability and off-shore wind farms. Learn the latest science and be ready to dazzle your dinner companions with you knowledge after this session.
May also brings the P.E.I. Public Library Service’s celebration of reading unity — One Book, One Island. This program celebrates Canadian literature and promotes literacy by encouraging all Islanders to read the same book and attend related events. 2017’s title is “Ru” by Kim Thuy, the award-winning story of a young Vietnamese girl and her unforgettable journey from a palatial residence in Saigon to a crowded and muddy Malaysian refugee camp and onward to a new life in Quebec.
In co-operation with the P.E.I. Association for Newcomers, the library will be celebrating OBOI with an event that features stories and videos about the newcomer experience on May 3 at 10:30 a.m. The author she will be doing readings at Summerside Library on May 2 at 7 p.m., Bibliotheque publique Dr. J. Edmond Arsenault (in French) on May 3 at 1:30 p.m. and at the Cornwall library at 7 p.m.
The children’s library has regularly scheduled weekly programs. Family Storytime on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and for the littler ones we have Toddler Time on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and Baby Lapsit at 1:30 p.m. Bigger kids can enjoy the Comic Club meetings on Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. or Sunday Lego club at 2 p.m. Budding writers are invited to the Junior Writing Group on April 26 at 4 p.m. and modeling clay into art is on the agenda at Craft Club on May 2 at 6:30 p.m.
The kids will also be celebrating Comic-Con with local author Dave Atkinson. ComicCon Kids Comics is on Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. Atkinson will be teaching about the art of telling stories through comics and helping everyone can create their own comics. Use your creation to enter the Kids ComicCon drawing contest. Then on May 5 at 2 p.m., the UPEI Robotics club will be visiting to help everyone build their own robots. Both of these programs are for ages 5-11. Call call 902367-4644 to register.
Other visitors to the children’s library include Joshua Giraffe (aka Mr. Giraffe) on April 30 at 1:30 p.m. He will offer up stories, music, audience participation and a great time. On May 10 at 10 a.m. celebrate Canadian Children’s Book Week with author/illustrator Caroll Simpson.
The library is helping to celebrate Reading Town the first week of May so look for us on public transit on May 5 with Stories on the Bus and presenting Yoga Stories on May 6 at Murphy’s Community Centre. Also part of the RT festivities is the launch of the young adult novel Maud: A novel inspired by the life of L. M. Montgomery by Melanie Fishbane, May 4 at 7 p.m.
P.E.I. Status of Women Lunch and Learns will be held on April 27 and May 11 at noon. This bi-weekly program looks at women’s history, decade by decade.
On May 11, at 7 p.m. the library is giving you an opportunity to share your words at Open Mic night. Our Mid-morning book club is discussing this years’ One Book One Island title, May 10 at 10 a.m. Drop in to the library to register and pick up a copy.
