UPEI says Forbes MacPherson inked a four-year extension to coach the men’s hockey Panthers on Tuesday.

UPEI men’s hockey coach Forbes MacPherson has reportedly signed a four-year extension.

The news was announced on UPEI’s Twitter handle on Tuesday although it has not been confirmed to The Guardian by the university.

MacPherson could not be reached for comment on Tuesday night.

The tweet showed a picture of MacPherson signing a document, likely the contract extension.

MacPherson will be entering his ninth season as head coach of the Panthers and is the ninth head coach at UPEI.

With MacPherson behind the bench, the 2012-13 version of the team finished the season as the ninth-ranked university team in Canada.

As a player, he competed in the Atlantic University Sport as a member of UNB from 1991 to 1993 and as a member of the UPEI Panthers from 1994 to 1996.

Following his graduation, MacPherson played professional hockey in a number of leagues including the Central Hockey League (CHL), East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).

Following his playing days, he served as assistant coach and director of hockey operations for the Texas Brahmas in the CHL.

He was also selected as Team Canada’s associate coach at the 26th Winter World University Games.
